Y'know there's something I really like about the One Piece character designs, and it's not just that everyone looks like they're perpetually on crack.

For instance Nami, who loves tangerines, has a hairstyle which, if you imagine a stem popping out of it, could easily look like a tangerine (or a pumpkin...). Not only that she has that very smooth figure like a cat's (honestly she reminds me so much of my calico), which ties in well with the rest of her character--her two enemies Arlong and Nezumi resembled a fish and a mouse, and she loves money, which presents some irony in the Japanese proverb "neko ni koban" or "gold coins to cats" (akin to "pearls before swine"). Also, according to Kaizoku-Fansubs' translation notes there's also a connection between tangerines being associated with both cats and wealth.
