This was sort of a quickie, only done in about one day. I'm afraid I'm going to wake up tomorrow and think this is crap, though. Anyhow... boring explination below.
It used to be that I'd draw mermaids with more attention to the aesthetics. I'd give them really long, colorful tails and their fins would be really fancy and lacey. But this time I wanted to be a little more practical. I based them a little off of dolphins or whales, as if instead of a fish half-evolving into a human, a human would be going back to the water (it's theorized that whales did that).
The fun part was that upon inspecting the back fin, it gave me the feeling that indeed the human grew into a fish, and not the other way around. If I make any sense here, I'm going to get my cup of coffee in a second.
I really do like this. as you put it I have seen alot of the aesthetic repetition with fins...long and colorful but in no way practical for their intended use. this is fantastic, from the dorsal fin to the way his body bends.
I hope Im not over analyzing but I notice you didnt give him chisled abs which for the sake of water living creatures be innacurate. most mammals that live in, or that can live in water have extra fat stored in their body, for insulation, bouyancy, and smoother travel in water. intentional or not, very nice.
You did an awesome job on him, and he looks quite cetacean, which is rare to see. I love the tail and the color and pose. Though I don't understand why there are little fins on the side (dolphin's flippers correspond to a human's arm, they have the exact same bones inside.), so I'd leave those off, but it is an interesting design nonetheless.
Wow, beautiful. ^_^ He does look like he's returning to the sea, great transition from human to cetacean. The arch of his body is great, and his face is very cute. Excellent!
And the water is superb, too. I hate doing underwater pictures.

But just a quick note: apart from the fact that his tail fin is horizontal, he seems more shark than cetacean: the extra two fins near the tail, the colour/texture of his grey skin...
